HOW TO PLAY PICKLEBALL
BASICS FOR YOU TO GO FROM SPECTATOR TO COURT IN ONE DAY!
Since doubles is the most common format, we'll focus on that here. It's also great for meeting new people—especially during open play, where you can simply show up and jump into a game. If you're nervous about your first time on court, just reach out—I'll help make sure someone can meet you there.
Doubles Play (2 on 2)
Pickleball doubles involves two players on each team and is by far the most popular way to play. You can only score when your team is serving, and the first team to reach 11 points wins. But you must win by 2—so if the score is tied at 10-10, the game keeps going until one team pulls ahead by two points. It adds a fun layer of tension and can be both exciting and exhausting as the rally stretches on.
Court Lines & "The Kitchen"
"The Kitchen" is unique to pickleball and refers to the official name of the "No Volley Zone." This line goes the width of the court and is 7 feet from the net. You can only cross the line if the ball bounces into this "kitchen" area after the serve. Thus, there are no volleys in "The Kitchen." The outer lines start at the top as the serving line and the side lines.
Scoring & Calling Score
In doubles pickleball, before serving, you must announce three parts of the score. For example, a score of "6-3-1." The first number is your score, followed by your opponents score and lastly if you are the 1st (1) server or 2nd (2). If you were the second server the score would be "6-3-2."
